"Alexa, send my shopping list"

In March 2020, I collaborated with product and engineering partners to design an experience that enabled customers to share their shopping list using Alexa. At the time, COVID-19 and stay-at-home restrictions made it difficult and dangerous for many, especially seniors and people living with disabilities, to shop for groceries. Giving those customers the ability to share their shopping list with loved ones using their voice, made it easier and safer for them to fulfill their shopping needs.

Design Goals

My goal was to help those unable to go to the grocery store get their groceries by…

  • Making it easier for customers to share their shopping list and communicate their shopping needs to others

  • Make list sharing more easily discoverable and accessible for customers living with visual or motor impairments

My Role

  • Designed voice, app, and Alexa device experiences

  • Consulted with designers from related external teams

  • Closely collaborated with PDM and developer from Alexa Shopping Accessibility team

  • Created voice interaction specs and redlines, worked closely with developer during implementation phase

The Solution

Breaking it down

Impact

  • Launched in early December

  • Soon after it launch we saw an increase in repeat users

  • Users were not only sharing lists for grocery shopping, but also for gift ideas

  • Received media coverage from multiple US outlets including CNBC, and Forbes

The opportunity to have another person assist with a chore like this is worth its weight in gold. It is a prime example of voice-first computing being truly helpful and serving a greater good.
